Relax and rejuvenate in one of North Carolina’s boutique spa properties
From the mesmerising Great Smoky Mountains to the peaceful Currituck Sound, the State of North Carolina offers the perfect location for a relaxing spa break.
One of the State’s most famous spa resorts, The Grove Park Inn (www.groveparkinn.com), situated just outside Asheville deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is built from rock from the nearby Sunset Mountain. Built beneath the hotel in order to preserve its quirky appearance, the spa stretches deep into the mountain, preserving a cool, welcoming temperature and ambiance. Signature treatments include Carolina Mud Pie Wrap and a buttermilk and Mountain Honey whirlpool bath – all with locally sourced ingredients.
Following the Blue Ridge Parkway north to the town of Blowing Rock, guests can experience over 20 different treatments at the Westglow Spa (www.westglow.com). The resort also encourages guests to explore the natural surrounding as part of their therapy and can arrange hikes, horse riding, kayaking, skiing and golf trips.
On the far side of the State, the coastline is protected from the Atlantic waves by a chain of sand bank islands called the Outer Banks. The inner Sounds are calm and tranquil in comparison with the adventure sport haven of the Atlantic side. The Sanderling in Duck (www.thesanderling.com) is located on the tranquil Currituck Sound. Guests can enjoy massages on balconies overlooking the water and body wraps using Russian Olives – found only on the Outer Banks.
Moving to North Carolina’s two cosmopolitan cities – Charlotte and Raleigh, two spas offer an ideal holiday break or the perfect retreat before your flight home. The Ballantyne Resort (www.ballantyneresort.com) in Charlotte is a soothing haven with a first class spa. The State capital, Raleigh, boasts North Carolina’s very first five-star property called The Umstead (www.theumstead.com). Guests can even enjoy a spa experience with 4-6 friends in their “spa within a spa” suite which can be hired out privately.
From a two week holistic rejuvenation package to short spa escape breaks, the State of North Carolina not only has first class facilities but also serene surrounding to complete the relaxation process.
