Mouth-Watering Meats to Magical Moonshine
Jul 1, 2008
Explore the unique cuisine of North Carolina
Infused with the spirit of the South, North Carolinians are inherently proud of their cuisine. Boasting succulent, fresh seafood on the coast to sizable, flavoursome ribs and steaks in the mountains, all washed down with delicious local wine, visitors are never far from culinary heaven!
Varying dramatically between the East and West of the State, BBQ is without doubt the most renowned dish and a must for any visitor to sample. Pulled pork is a regional favourite with visitors and locals alike and no BBQ is complete without accompanying sauces - ranging from tomato salsa on the coast to a dark vinegar relish in the mountains – equally as finger lickin’ and mouth watering!
“Corndogs” and “Grits” are another staple of North Carolinian cuisine - the first being deep fried mouthfuls of corn in breadcrumbs and the latter being similar to polenta and often flavoured with cheese and butter.
For the finer palate, the State doesn’t disappoint with a wide range of first-class restaurants – mainly due to the internationally acclaimed reputation of the chef school in Charlotte. Both Charlotte and the State capital, Raleigh, boast 5 star restaurants to rival cities more famed for their cuisine such as NYC and New Orleans.
Moving west from Raleigh, the Yadkin valley – the third most prolific wine growing region in America, stretches towards the mountains. With a superb combination of sun, soil and soul, the region is rapidly gaining a reputation for growing high-quality grapes and producing world-class wines.
From world class wines to alcohol of a different calibre, the notorious “Moonshine”. Famed for being closely linked with the beginnings of NASCAR racing (the creators of the potent liquor raced through the mountains with the police hot on their tails), the magical moonshine is still very much alive in the North Carolinian Mountains. For a less alcoholic tipple, enjoy a pitcher of Sweet Southern Tea, while watching the sun set over the blue-tinged mountains.
Boasting award winning wines and stories of America’s most notorious illegal liquor, tasty BBQ and haute cuisine, North Carolina is sure to tantalise your taste buds.
